The Same Now, at Different Speeds"
A person in space and a person standing on the ground. They appear to be living in the same "now," but in fact the way time passes is slightly different for each.
This is a well-known story, but because the strength of gravity differs between the ground and space, a slight discrepancy arises in how clocks progress. The weaker the gravity, the faster a clock runs; the stronger the gravity, the slower it runs. Since the earth's surface has a lower gravitational potential than outer space, clocks on the ground run slightly slow.
However, the reason astronauts float is not that gravity is not acting on them. It only appears weightless because they are continuously in free fall while orbiting the earth at high speed. And this fact of "moving at high speed" produces another kind of time discrepancy. That the faster something moves, the more slowly time passes for it, is a well-known property of relativity.
Here is where it gets interesting: for a spacecraft orbiting the earth, two effects compete against each other, the speeding-up of time due to gravity and the slowing-down of time due to speed. In an ordinary orbit like the ISS, the effect of speed wins out, so an astronaut's clock runs slightly behind the ground clock. In other words, when ten years have passed on the ground, the person who was in space has experienced slightly less than those ten years. It is not that the person in the spacecraft ages faster; rather, more precisely, their aging is slightly delayed.
There is another, different kind of time story: the time of the elephant and the time of the mouse. The elephant and the mouse live on the same earth, sharing the same one second. Measured by a clock, one second is exactly the same length for both. And yet the mouse's heartbeat and metabolism are fast, while the elephant's are slow. So within that same one second, the density of time flowing inside their bodies is entirely different.
In other words, time has at least two layers. One is time measured externally, by a clock. The other is time as experienced internally by that living being. The story of the spacecraft and the ground belongs to the former; the story of the elephant and the mouse belongs to the latter.
Drawing this into the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences, one hypothesis emerges: that phase difference does not, in fact, arise from a single cause. There is phase difference inherent in the physical laws themselves, arising even when no one is observing it (the relativistic time difference). There is phase difference built into the interior of a living being, arising from that being's own internal speed (the elephant and the mouse). There is phase difference built into the interior of a device (the streak camera). And there is phase difference that arises within the perception of the viewer (Paired Composition). These can be arranged not as a hierarchy or a simple parallel, but along a single axis of where the phase difference originates and by whom it is related.
However, a careful line must be drawn here. What relativity shows is only the physical fact that elapsed time changes according to place and speed. It does not thereby prove the claim of the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences, that multiple presents coexist while retaining a phase difference. Rather, the value of this story lies not in proof but in showing that the phenomenon of phase difference occurs, through different mechanisms, in far more places than one might have thought. Photography takes out one of these and presents it externally, as a relation between two images. Seen this way, both the story of space and the story of the elephant and the mouse turn out not to be distant trivia, but stories that had already been standing right beside one's own theory.
