We Are Talking Across a Temporal Difference— A Working Note on Micro-Phase Difference #
# Present, Past, and Future — A Working Note on Micro-Phase Difference
## 1. Starting Point
The present, the past, and the future are normally considered to be separated along a temporal axis. But what would happen if people occupying the same place existed in slightly different temporal phases? A is in the present, B is in the slightly past, and C is in the slightly future. Yet all three occupy the same place and converse with one another. Through this thought experiment, the question shifts from “Do the present, past, and future exist?” to “How can a relation be established between beings occupying different temporal phases?”
## 2. Different from Communication Delay
In communication delay, the speakers occupy the same temporal axis. What is displaced is the transmission of information, not the present in which they exist. In the present hypothesis, however, the speakers occupy the same place while existing in different temporal phases. For B, A's utterance is not simply an utterance that has arrived late; it is an utterance coming from a different phase. Therefore, figures obtained from research on communication delay concerning how long conversation can remain possible—for example, two seconds—are not derived from this hypothesis and cannot serve as its direct basis. Seconds are reduced to one measurement axis among others.
## 3. Prediction and Response
Suppose C is on the future side. When A says, “Tomorrow—,” and C replies, “It will rain,” A receives this as a prediction concerning a question that has not yet been completed. For C, however, it is a response to a question that C has already experienced. The same utterance acquires different meanings according to temporal phase.
A does not have to understand it as a response from the beginning. If A replies, “What? It will rain tomorrow?” and C says, “Because you just asked me that,” A can reinterpret the utterance he first received as a prediction as a response to his own utterance. The question, therefore, is not whether an utterance coming from a different phase is understood as a response from the beginning, but whether something received as a prediction can subsequently be reinterpreted as a response through the ensuing interaction.
## 4. Temporal Difference and Preemption
Whether a conversation breaks down cannot be determined by seconds alone. What matters is also how much information the person on the future side possesses in advance. If C knows only approximately how A's utterance will end, the prediction may be repaired within the conversation. If C already knows A's entire utterance, C no longer needs to wait for A to finish speaking. The magnitude of phase difference and the amount of information preempted are related, but they are not the same concept.
## 5. Conditions for the Definition
Micro-phase difference must not be defined as “a temporal difference in which the relation is maintained.” Otherwise, one would simply call something a micro-phase difference after observing that the relation was maintained, making the definition circular. Nor is it appropriate to define it as “a state in which both parties can understand the utterance as a response from the beginning.” An utterance from the future side may initially arrive as a prediction.
The provisional definition is therefore as follows:
> Micro-phase difference is a state in which utterances between beings occupying different temporal phases may appear as predictions or discrepancies, while retaining the possibility that subsequent interaction will reinterpret them as mutual responses.
However, this possibility must not be defined retrospectively according to whether reinterpretation actually occurs. It must be established as a condition observable at the moment of utterance.
## 6. Residual
The portion of A's utterance that is not covered by C's preemption and remains unresolved on A's side is called the **residual**. If A says, “Tomorrow—” and C merely replies, “It will rain,” most of what A intended to say remains as residual. If C says, “That's why you will take an umbrella, and you will fall at the station,” almost no residual remains.
The residual is not determined retrospectively after repair has occurred. It is observed at the moment C's utterance enters the conversation. One possible cue from conversation analysis is whether C's utterance enters before or after the completion point of A's utterance. If it enters before that point, A still has a structural reason to continue speaking. The sequence is therefore:
**preemption → residual → repair/reinterpretation.**
The residual is an antecedent; repair and reinterpretation are consequents.
The definition can therefore be narrowed as follows:
> Micro-phase difference is a state in which preemption occurs while a residual not covered by that preemption remains on the participant's side, and in which that residual retains the possibility of serving as a foothold for reinterpreting a prediction as a response.
## 7. The Two Extremes and the Intermediate Region
If preemption is zero, no prediction occurs and no repair is necessary. If preemption is complete, the residual becomes zero and the possibility of response is consumed. These are the two extremes on the conversational preemption axis.
Separately, if Δt approaches zero, the phase difference itself contracts toward identity. This extreme belongs not to the preemption axis but to the Δt axis.
Difference can therefore be considered in three states: identity; relation formation in which difference exists and reinterpretation can occur on the basis of residual; and difficulty in relation formation, in which phase difference or preemption eliminates the possibility of reinterpretation. Micro-phase difference theory concerns the second region.
It is neither identical nor unrelated. Something remains within the difference that can become a basis for relation.
## 8. Conditions for Falsification
The hypothesis would fail in at least three cases.
First, if preemption exists and the residual is sufficiently large, yet neither repair nor reinterpretation occurs and the conversation regularly breaks down. This would challenge the hypothesis that residual supports the possibility of response formation.
Second, if the residual is nearly zero, yet A naturally reinterprets the utterance as a response to A's own speech. This would challenge the hypothesis that residual is a necessary condition.
Third, if the residual is intermediate, yet the occurrence of repair shows no regularity whatsoever from one conversation to another. This would cast doubt on the validity of residual itself as a measurement.
## 9. Conversation and Paired Composition
In conversation, the participants themselves establish the relation, so the measurement takes place from within the relation. This connects conceptually with Husserl's retention and protention. The present is not a point; it includes retention of what has just occurred and protention toward what is coming. Conversation already takes place within a temporally extended present.
In paired composition, the viewer outside the two photographs establishes the relation between them. The measurement therefore takes place from outside the relation. The appearance of the third party also differs. In conversation, an external observer is needed later to analyze how the relation was established. In paired composition, the viewer is already outside the two images from the beginning.
Difference does not arise without relation-making. Even if C preempts everything, the difference itself does not disappear; rather, the room for reinterpreting the difference as a relation is lost.
A corresponding concept to the conversational residual can also be placed on the side of paired composition. When two photographs are viewed as a pair, there may be a portion that is neither recovered as identity nor reduced simply to difference, but remains unresolved for the viewer. This is called **perceptual residual**, and is provisionally regarded as the substance of what has previously been called *ma* or interval.
The counterpart of repair in conversation is the viewer's repeated movement of gaze and attention between the two photographs and the reorganization of their relation.
It is hypothesized that simply placing two identical photographs side by side remains merely a change in impression because the residual disappears and the two photographs collapse into a repetition of one image. This is a hypothesis and will be examined under the second measurement condition in Section 11.
## 10. Correspondence
Conversation has two axes. One is Δt, the phase difference itself. The other is preemption, the informational effect that may arise from the phase difference. The two are not identical. Even when Δt exists, preemption may be very small depending on the content of the conversation.
Paired composition also has two axes. One is Δt, the temporal difference deliberately introduced between the taking of the two photographs. This temporal difference, consciously employed in the new work, corresponds to Δt in conversation. The other is preemption: one photograph determining the reading of the other in advance. Captions and ordering are typical examples. If this preemption becomes complete, the second photograph is reduced to an explanation of the first, and the residual becomes zero. This corresponds in polarity to the complete-preemption extreme on the conversational side.
Separately, there is **identity pressure**, an action that attempts to recover the difference between the two photographs into a single identity. If it becomes complete, the two photographs become a repetition of one image. Its conversational counterpart is **formulaic normalization**, in which an utterance is reduced to a conventional response pattern. A conversation that ends with “It will rain” followed by “I see” can be regarded as a case in which difference has been recovered into identity. Identity pressure and formulaic normalization are treated as a separate action from preemption. However, it remains undetermined whether a force operating on the viewer and a pattern of speech can properly be treated as axes of the same kind.
There is also a difference in direction. In conversation, the direction of preemption is fixed by the condition that C occupies the future side. In paired composition, preemption is restricted not to the order in which the photographs were taken but to the order in which they are read.
However, the reversibility of reading order is a matter of comparison between viewers or between experimental conditions. Once an individual viewer has read the first photograph, that reading remains in place while the viewer looks at the second. Thus, within a single viewing sequence, preemption operates in a fixed direction. Similarly, C's utterance in conversation might not be received as a prediction by another observer occupying a different position. The difference in reversibility is therefore less a difference between inside and outside than a difference between viewing within a single sequence and changing the conditions of the sequence.
Conversational preemption arises from phase difference Δt, whereas preemption in paired composition arises not from the temporal difference in taking the photographs but from the conditions of reading. The fact that the sources of preemption differ between the two is itself one of the points at which the correspondence may break down.
## 11. Unresolved Issues and Measurement Conditions
Unresolved issues should not simply be left unresolved; they should be accompanied by measurement conditions.
First: whether the residual can actually be observed at the moment it is preempted. Collect conversations in which preemption enters before the completion point and conversations in which it enters after the completion point, and compare the presence and forms of repair. The three falsification conditions in Section 8 can be tested here.
Second: whether perceptual residual in paired composition can be extracted through viewer reports. Show the same two photographs to different groups while changing only the order of reading, and compare interpretations of the second photograph with reports that neither interpretation can be decisively established. The presence or strength of captions can also be varied as an operation on preemption.
Third: whether identity pressure and formulaic normalization can be placed on the same axis. On the conversational side, vary the proportion of formulaic responses; on the paired-composition side, vary the similarity between the two photographs, and observe how the residual changes in each case. If the forms of decrease are similar, this provides grounds for treating them as the same axis. If they are not, the axes should be regarded as different.
The way in which the correspondence breaks down may serve as a scale for measuring the difference between measurement from within and measurement from outside—that is, the difference in the position of the third party.
## 12. Present, Past, and Future
The present, past, and future need not be conceived as three separate worlds. They can instead be considered different temporal positions with respect to the same event. What is future for A is past for C. An utterance that is a prediction for A is a memory for C. Nevertheless, conversation may still be established between them through reinterpretation and repair.
What matters here is not whether they experience the same time, but what kind of relation can be established between beings occupying different temporal positions.
## 13. The Current Hypothesis
The present, past, and future are not necessarily mutually disconnected domains. Even beings occupying different temporal phases may retain their difference while reinterpreting that difference as a relation.
Micro-phase difference is a state in which, between beings occupying different temporal phases, a phase difference Δt exists; the preemption arising from that phase difference and the residual not covered by the preemption coexist; and the residual retains the possibility of serving as a foothold through which difference can be reinterpreted as relation. “Micro” does not refer to a number of seconds. What matters is not how far apart the temporal positions are, but how much possibility for relation formation remains within the difference.
Through this question, the problem of the present, past, and future shifts from asking whether time itself is multiple to asking how the difference between things occupying different phases can become a relation.
