The Theory of Micro-Phase Differences — Photography, Time, and the Viewpoint of the Third Party

Yoshiro Shinkawa

Preface

This text sets aside the format of a master's thesis and writes out, once again freely, the thinking accumulated so far. Its aim is not to prove anything, but to accurately describe the point that has been reached so far.

I. Starting Point — The Specificity of Photography as a Medium

Photography is one of the few media that can establish a flowing reality as an independent, still image. It cannot stop moving reality itself, but photography cuts out a cross-section of that reality as an independent term, an image. That this image itself can be treated as the basic unit of a work is the specificity of photography as a medium.

When two photographs are placed side by side, what happens there is not mere comparison. While each of the two remains an independent, still term, the act of viewing them together gives rise, within perception, to an "interval" that is not depicted in either photograph. This "interval" is precisely the object that the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences has consistently questioned.

II. The Hypothesis That Time Is One

For a long time, this theory has argued for the plurality of time itself, through the formulation that "the present is a field in which multiple phases overlap." But on reconsideration, there is no need to hold that time itself has become plural.

The astronaut's clock, the clock on the ground, the elephant's internal time, the mouse's internal time, the past instant captured in a photograph — at bottom, all of these exist upon the same single time. Time is not fractured; it is constant. This is not a conclusion that physics proves for us, but a philosophical position adopted by this theory.

III. The Real Distortion — A Precedent from Physics

At the same time, it is also certain that a real distortion arises on top of that constant time. The faster something moves, the more slowly time passes for it; the stronger the gravity, the more a clock lags behind. This is not a matter of belief — it is a measured physical phenomenon. If this distortion were not corrected for, GPS satellite clocks would drift enough to render positioning data useless.

For a spacecraft orbiting the earth, two effects compete — the advance of time due to gravity, and the delay of time due to speed — and in an ordinary orbit the effect of speed wins out, so the astronaut's clock runs slightly behind the one on the ground. This is not proof that there are multiple times; it is proof that a real distortion runs across a single time.

An important caution belongs here. This distortion carries meaning as a "difference" not while the two clocks are running apart from each other. It is only at the moment the spacecraft returns to earth and the two clocks are set side by side — that is, the moment relating is performed from outside — that it rises up as a phase difference for the first time. Even if the distortion is inherent in the laws of physics, for it to be experienced as a "difference" it always requires a subsequent act of relating.

IV. Difference in Biological Speed — A Phenomenon Distinct from Distortion

The difference between the internal time of the elephant and that of the mouse belongs to a different category of phenomenon. Physically, the elephant and the mouse are within almost the same time field. Spacetime is not distorted; only the speed of the metabolism and heartbeat flowing within that time differs.

What must be noted here is that when one says "the elephant and the mouse live the same second," it is neither the elephant nor the mouse that is making this claim. The elephant lives only its own sense of speed, and the mouse likewise lives only its own. It is always a third party, looking on from outside, who regards the two as existing simultaneously within the same time field.

Relativistic distortion and biological difference in speed resemble each other, but belong to entirely different mechanisms. The former is a geometric property of spacetime itself; the latter is a physiological phenomenon within the same spacetime. To describe both with the same words lowers the precision of the theory.

V. The Layer of Relating — The Viewpoint of the Third Party

There is yet another layer, neither the physical distortion nor the biological difference in speed. It is not the distortion or the difference in speed itself, but the layer of interpretation and relating — how one gives it meaning, what one calls the present, and what one calls the past or the future.

Here it is necessary to distinguish the difference itself from the difference coming to be established as a "difference." The physical distortion and the biological difference in speed have already occurred, in themselves. The spacecraft's clock lags behind the one on the ground even if no one is watching; the metabolic rates of the elephant and the mouse differ even if no one is observing. But for this difference to be recognized, and to carry meaning, as a "difference" between two things, relating is always necessary. The difference between the spacecraft's clock and the ground's clock is not known by the two clocks themselves; it is established as a "difference" only by the person who returns and compares the two. The fact that the elephant and the mouse exist within the same time is likewise established not by the elephant or the mouse, but by the third party looking on from outside. This is a type of relating that discovers, after the fact, a difference that already exists.

By contrast, the streak camera and Paired Composition perform a relating of a different nature. In the streak camera, the very design that converts a time difference into a spatial difference and presents it on the same screen has relating built into the device beforehand. In Paired Composition, a third party does not discover a difference that exists between two photographs. The two photographs exist, at the moment they were taken, knowing nothing of each other. It is only through perceiving them as a single pair that the "interval," which until then had not existed on its own, is generated for the first time. Here, relating is not discovery but generation.

In other words, there are two types of relating. One is the type in which a viewpoint standing outside the parties discovers, after the fact, a difference that already exists, and establishes it as a "difference" (physical distortion, biological difference in speed). The other is the type in which the act of relating itself generates a difference that did not exist before (the device, Paired Composition). What the two share is that the difference itself and its coming to be established as a "difference" are not the same thing. For a difference to appear as a difference, relating from outside the parties is required. This theory calls the position at which this relating takes place the viewpoint of the third party, but this does not necessarily mean a human observer. It may be a design built into a device, or it may be the self-referential position at which a living being relates its own past state to its present state. What matters is that the position performing the relating is functionally distinct from the parties being related. This is the clearest principle this theory has reached through the dialogue so far.

VI. A Connection to Inner Time-Consciousness — Husserl's Perspective

The previous section spoke of "the self-referential position at which a living being relates its own past state to its present state," but this structure already has a precise vocabulary — Husserl's theory of inner time-consciousness.

Husserl held that the moment called "now" is not a point, but already has a structure within it. What one is now perceiving is constantly accompanied by retention, which still holds on to what has just passed, and protention, which anticipates in advance what is about to arrive. Husserl called this present, which has width and contains both retention and protention, the "living present" (lebendige Gegenwart).

That is to say, consciousness, within a single "now," is already continuously relating its own immediately-before and immediately-after. This shows that the principle this theory states — that the position performing the relating is functionally distinct from the parties being related — is in fact already occurring within the first person as well. The position called the present already contains, within itself, the position of a third party relating its own other phases, the retention just before and the protention just after.

What Paired Composition does is draw this structure out from within the closed interior of a single consciousness into the space between two external objects, two photographs. It transposes the relating of retention and protention, which Husserl thought occurred within the first person, to an outer place — the space between two images — that anyone can look into. In this sense, Paired Composition can be described as a practice that externalizes the structure of inner time-consciousness by means of the medium of photography, rendering it into a form shareable with others.

VII. Paired Composition — The Generation of Relating in Photography

Paired Composition is a practice that artificially generates this relating by the viewpoint of the third party, using the apparatus of photography.

The two photographs exist, each an independent still image, without knowing anything of the other. At the moment it was taken, the first photograph knows nothing whatsoever of the second photograph's existence. Only the act of placing these two side by side and viewing them together gives rise to the "interval" that is not depicted in either.

What matters here is that this relating is not mere discovery, but generation. In the case of the reunion comparison in relativity, or the third party observing the elephant and the mouse, relating is an act of belatedly discovering a difference that had already been proceeding. But in the case of Paired Composition, it is the reverse: the act of relating itself, the placing of the two side by side, produces a difference that did not exist before. Rather than reading, after the fact, a difference that was already running ahead, the act of relating itself generates the difference.

Photograph A and photograph B do not each represent time itself. Within the single act of perceiving A and B at once, an "interval" belonging to neither is experienced. What is at work here is not the order in which time arises from phase difference, but the order in which the perception of an interval arises from the mismatch between two phases, and the experience of time arises from that perception of the interval.

VIII. Why Must There Be Two

Here remains a question that this theory has not yet fully resolved, but that is the most important one. Why is the form of photography necessary? And why must there be two?

As one hypothesis, there is the view that the form of two might be the minimal relational unit capable of establishing identity and difference simultaneously. Once there are three or more, it is no longer a simple binary relation but becomes a network of intertwined multiple relations, and its very nature changes. The number two is the minimal unit at which something can still be perceived as a pair, and within that single act of perception, the aspect of identity and the aspect of difference come to be established at once.

Just as difference cannot be established without relating, identity too cannot be established without relating. It is not that identity comes first and difference arises there, nor that difference comes first and identity is discovered there. Within the single act of perception of seeing two photographs as one pair, the aspect of identity and the aspect of difference rise up at the same time.

IX. Connection to Practice

This theory was not constructed as armchair speculation. It has emerged from the practice of photographing the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea for forty years, and from the very act, within a lineage of Altered Landscape that began from a New Topographics-like viewpoint, of repeatedly photographing the same place again and again.

When a landscape that could not be photographed immediately after the earthquake was photographed again, years later, at the same place, what was captured there was not simply a "record of recovery." When the landscape immediately after the earthquake and the landscape in the process of recovery are placed side by side, the "interval" that rises up there houses time itself, which was never directly photographed. This experience is precisely the starting point of the way of thinking called the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences.

結語

Conclusion

Time is one. Upon it lies a real distortion; separate from that distortion is a difference in biological speed; and above both lies a layer in which how one relates these and raises up meaning. The cases from physics and biology are not evidence proving this theory, but mere precedents showing how the phenomenon of phase difference occurs, through different mechanisms, in far more places than one might have thought.

What this theory truly requires is not physical proof. It is the single task of how to describe, within the medium of photography, and how to present as practice, the structure whereby a difference, in order to be established as such, requires a position — the viewpoint of the third party — that is functionally distinct from the parties being related. Paired Composition is the method for this task, and the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences is the attempt to put into words what that method is trying to capture.
