Different Heights, Different Times — Is There Really Only One Present?
We normally think that time flows in the same way for everyone.
But in reality, that is not the case.
According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the passage of time changes slightly depending on height. At higher places, farther from the center of the Earth, the influence of gravity is weaker, and clocks run slightly faster.
For example, consider a person living at 0 m above sea level and another person living at 100 m.
Over 100 years, the difference would be about 0.03 seconds.
Only 0.03 seconds.
In everyday life, this is a difference that we could never feel.
However, this is not merely a theoretical imagination. It is an actual difference in time.
Let us consider a more extreme example.
In Peru, South America, there is a town called La Rinconada at an altitude of about 5,100 m. If we compare someone who lived there for 100 years with someone who lived at sea level, a simplified calculation gives a difference of about 1.6 seconds.
1.6 seconds over 100 years.
Even so, when considered over the length of a human lifetime, this “difference in time” accumulates.
And even if that person moves from the highlands down to sea level, the time difference that has already accumulated does not disappear.
The time spent at the higher place remains as part of that person’s proper time.
In other words, even if the two people return to the same place, the time they have experienced up to that point does not become completely identical.
This is what I find interesting.
We think of the “present” as one single thing.
Now is now.
The past is the past.
The future is the future.
But in reality, the time experienced by human beings is not that simple.
Each person is in a different place, moves at a different speed, is at a different height, and has lived through a different amount of time.
And each person has different memories and experiences.
Therefore, even when looking at the same thing in the same place, we may not be looking at exactly the same “present.”
I think of this small difference as a “micro-phase difference.”
This is not the same thing as the physical time difference caused by differences in altitude.
What I am thinking about is the difference in time within human perception and experience.
Even when looking at the same thing, the present that appears there is slightly different for each person.
It does not mean that one person is looking at the past while another is looking at the future.
Everyone is in the present.
However, that “present” is not completely identical.
For me, photography is also a place for thinking about this.
A photograph contains the time at which it was taken.
There is also the time of the things depicted in it.
There is my time as the photographer.
And there is the time of the person looking at it.
They overlap on a single photographic surface.
Therefore, I do not think of the present as a single point.
Perhaps the present is a place where countless small differences in time overlap.
I call these small differences “micro-phase differences.”
Note
The difference in the passage of time described here through general relativity is not intended to prove the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences through physics.
The difference in the rate at which time passes due to gravity is a phenomenon that has been experimentally established by physics. The “micro-phase difference” that I am considering, however, is not a physical theory directly derived from this phenomenon. It is a concept through which I consider the non-identity of time in relation to human perception, experience, and photography.
Therefore, what I am presenting here is not the claim that the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences has been proven by physics. Rather, I am taking the differences in time already established by physics as one point of departure for considering my own question.
