The Distortion Is Real, Time Is One
I have come to think that there is, in fact, only one time. The astronaut's clock, the clock on the ground, the elephant's internal time, the mouse's internal time — at bottom, they all rest on the same single time. It is not fractured. It is constant.
And yet, real distortion does occur on top of that constant time. The faster something moves, the more slowly time passes for it; the stronger the gravity, the more a clock lags behind. This is not a matter of belief — it is a measured phenomenon. GPS satellite clocks would drift by kilometers if this distortion were not corrected for. The distortion is real. There are not multiple times; rather, a real distortion runs across a single time.
The story of the elephant and the mouse is a different kind of difference. The elephant and the mouse live within the same undistorted second. It is not that spacetime is bent; it is that the pace of metabolism and heartbeat flowing through that second differs. Distortion and difference in internal speed resemble each other, but belong to entirely different categories.
There is yet another layer, separate from the distortion or the difference in internal speed itself: the layer of how one interprets it — what one calls the present, and what one calls the past or the future. This layer is made of belief. When two photographs are placed side by side, the difference that arises there does not come from time itself becoming plural; it comes from the act of relating the two images to each other. This is precisely the layer that Paired Composition works with.
In short: time is one. Upon it lies a real distortion; separate from that distortion is a difference in the internal speed of living things; and above both lies the layer in which humans, or photographs, relate these things to each other and thereby generate meaning. What the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences truly requires, I think, is not physical proof, but a description of this final layer alone.
