Zoe Keating Exurgency

Zoë Keating — Exurgency

Zoë Keating

Zoë Keating — Exurgency

I have been listening to Zoë Keating’s One Cello x 16 EP.

Among the tracks, “Exurgency” is particularly interesting to me.

I have not yet found a clear explanation from Keating herself about the meaning of the title, so here I would rather write about what I hear in the music.

Zoë Keating plays a single cello, records the sound, and then layers her own performances on top of one another.

There is only one performer, but within the music, there are several versions of the same person.

The cello she played a moment ago.
The cello she played before that.
And the cello she is playing now.

The earlier sounds do not simply disappear. They remain within the present sound.

Listening to it, I sometimes feel as if one cellist is not playing alone, but as if the same person, existing at different moments in time, is playing together in the same space.

This seems to me to be more than simply describing the music as multi-track recording.

Photography also fixes a moment. But that moment does not exist completely in isolation. There is the time in which the photograph was taken, the moments before and after it, and the time in which we are looking at it now.

There are small differences between these moments.

When I listen to Exurgency, I feel as though those differences are becoming sound.

The past sound and the present sound are not identical.

But neither are they completely unrelated.

It is that small difference between them that overlaps and creates a single present.

From one cello, several different moments in time emerge.

That, for me, is what makes this piece so fascinating.
