Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design(Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im.

Report on the Background Image of Eikoh Hosoe’s Ordeal by Roses (Bara-kei) #32

My records on Facebook.

The one who identified the background painting of Ordeal by Roses #32, from Eikoh Hosoe's photobook Ordeal by Roses (1963), was a Polish art historian. (Note: I mean within this conversation, not as a matter of historical record.)

Among the photographs in Eikoh Hosoe's photobook Ordeal by Roses (1963), there is one known as Ordeal by Roses #32. Yukio Mishima stands holding a rose in front of his chest, and behind him a man's face is superimposed so large that it fills the entire frame.

What painting is this face in the background? The one who found out is my friend in Poland, Emilla Oktawia Łagiewska.

Emilla is an artist who works in painting, photography and objects. She earned a master's degree in art history at the Institute of Art History (Instytut Historii Sztuki) of the University of Wrocław, and then took postgraduate studies (studia podyplomowe) at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław (Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Eugeniusza Gepperta we Wrocławiu), where her field was Plastyka muzyka - sztuki zintegrowane (visual arts, music - integrated arts). She has taught art history, painting and drawing to young people and adults, and has worked in art therapy, at national educational institutions and at state public organizations related to culture. She still gives private lessons in her own studio. She makes a point of saying that she is an art historian, not an art critic, before she gives her views.

Emilla asked an AI about the formal structure of this photograph, in other words, its composition. The AI first answered that it was Giorgione's Sleeping Venus. Emilla rejected this because the eyes of the figure in the background are open. The Venus who is supposed to be asleep has her eyes open.

Next, the AI answered that it was Botticelli's The Birth of Venus. Emilla rejected this too. The face is turned in the opposite direction, and in contrast to the delicate features of Botticelli's young girl, the face in the photograph is clearly masculine.

Up to this point, Emilla tested each hypothesis using only what can be seen. Whether the eyes are open or closed, which way the face is turned, whether the features are masculine or feminine: all of these are inside the image, and can be checked simply by looking at the photograph.

Then, in the third round of searching, Emilla handed over one detail from within the image as a clue. It was the arrow that pierces the neck of the figure in the background and runs diagonally out toward the right side of the photograph. In Christian iconography, the arrow is the attribute of Saint Sebastian, the saint who was tied to a post and pierced with arrows. The expression, in which ecstasy and pain are one, also fits this reading. With this clue, the AI finally arrived at paintings of Saint Sebastian and offered three candidates. From among them, Emilla chose the Saint Sebastian painted around 1525 by Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Il Sodoma.

I found this painting and compared it with the background of the photograph. The details match in every respect: the raised head, the curly hair, the arrow piercing the neck diagonally. Emilla's identification was correct.

What makes this discovery excellent is not only the correctness of the conclusion. She advanced step by step, from one detail, the arrow, through iconography to the saint, and from the saint to a specific painting. The AI missed twice and arrived on the third attempt. It arrived because Emilla kept supplying the criteria for verification. I think this is a textbook example of how an art historian trained in iconography proceeds when reading a photograph through its form.

There is also something else at work in this reading: knowledge from outside the photograph. Emilla has been interested in Mishima for several years and has read several biographies of him. She also knew that Mishima wrote, in his autobiographical novel Confessions of a Mask, about encountering a painting of Saint Sebastian in his youth. So for Emilla, recognizing the figure in the background as Saint Sebastian was the point where her knowledge of art history and her knowledge of Mishima met, through the arrow inside the image. To read what is inside a photograph, one needs knowledge from outside it. This single photograph teaches us that as well.

The saint superimposed behind Mishima is not decoration. The diagonal arrow was the way into understanding what Hosoe intended to overlay in this shoot.

Emilla, thank you. I have recorded a valuable conversation from Facebook.
