Why Does Manjushage Exist in Japan?
秋になると、田んぼの畦や墓地の周辺に突然、赤い花が現れる。曼殊沙華（まんじゅしゃげ）。一般には彼岸花と呼ばれる花である。
Every autumn, red flowers suddenly appear along rice fields and around cemeteries. They are called Manjushage in Japan, more commonly known as Higanbana, the red spider lily.
ふと気になった。
I began to wonder about this flower.
ネパールにはヒガンバナがある。しかし、ミャンマーには、少なくとも現在のところ、ヒガンバナ（Lycoris radiata）の確かな自生分布は確認しにくい。一方、日本には広く存在している。
The red spider lily (Lycoris radiata) is found in Nepal. Yet, at least according to currently available records, there is no clear evidence of the same species occurring naturally in Myanmar. In Japan, on the other hand, it is widespread.
この違いは、単なる植物の分布だけでは説明できないのではないか。
Could this difference have something to do with religion, rather than simply with the natural distribution of a plant?
もちろん、現在の植物学的な見解では、ヒガンバナは中国南部を中心とする地域から日本へ渡来したものと考えられている。したがって、ネパールから仏教とともに日本へ伝わったと考える根拠はない。
Botanically, the red spider lily is generally thought to have been introduced to Japan from China, probably from southern China. Therefore, there is no evidence that the plant itself came from Nepal to Japan together with Buddhism.
しかし、ここで興味深いのが「曼殊沙華」という名前である。
But there is another interesting aspect: the name Manjushage.
曼殊沙華は仏教経典に登場する言葉で、天から降ってくる吉祥の花として語られる。ところが、経典にいう曼殊沙華と、現在日本で彼岸花と呼ばれている植物が、もともと同じ植物だったというわけではない。
Manjushage is a Buddhist term appearing in Buddhist scriptures, where it refers to an auspicious flower said to descend from heaven. However, the Manjushage of Buddhist scriptures was not necessarily the same plant as the red spider lily that is called Higanbana in Japan today.
つまり、二つの異なる流れがあった可能性がある。
In other words, there may have been two separate movements.
一つは、植物としてのヒガンバナの伝播。
One was the movement of the plant itself.
もう一つは、仏教における「曼殊沙華」という名前と観念の伝播である。
The other was the movement of the Buddhist name and concept of Manjushage.
それが日本に入ったところで、二つが重なった。
In Japan, these two different streams eventually came together.
ここに私は少し興味を感じる。
This is what I find particularly interesting.
仏教はインドから中国へ、そして朝鮮半島を経て日本へ伝わった。一方、ヒガンバナは植物として中国方面から日本へ渡来したと考えられている。
Buddhism traveled from India through China and the Korean Peninsula to Japan. The red spider lily, meanwhile, is thought to have traveled as a plant from China toward Japan.
では、なぜ日本ではこの花に「曼殊沙華」という仏教的な名前が与えられ、彼岸の時期に咲く花として定着したのだろうか。
So why did this particular flower become associated in Japan with the Buddhist term Manjushage, and why did it become so strongly connected with the period of Higan?
さらに、仏教の源流に近いネパールにはヒガンバナが見られるのに、南伝仏教の中心地の一つであるミャンマーでは、少なくとも現在の資料からは同じような自生分布が明瞭ではない。
Furthermore, the red spider lily can be found in Nepal, a region close to the origins of Buddhism, while in Myanmar, one of the major centers of Theravada Buddhism, a comparable natural distribution is not clearly documented, at least in the sources currently available.
これは、まだ結論を出せる問題ではない。
This is not a question for which we can draw a definite conclusion yet.
しかし、植物の移動と宗教文化の移動が、どこで交差したのかという視点で見ると、曼殊沙華は単なる秋の花ではなくなる。
But if we look at the question from the perspective of where the movement of plants and the movement of religious culture intersected, Manjushage becomes more than simply an autumn flower.
植物は人間とともに移動する。
Plants move with people.
そして、名前や意味もまた、人間とともに移動する。
And names and meanings move with people as well.
ある植物がどこにあるのかという地理的な問題と、その植物が人間にとって何を意味するのかという文化的な問題は、必ずしも同じではない。
The geographical question of where a plant exists and the cultural question of what that plant means to human beings are not necessarily the same.
曼殊沙華という名前には、その二つの流れが重なった痕跡が残っているのかもしれない。
Perhaps the name Manjushage preserves a trace of the point where these two different movements crossed.
私は、そこに少し興味を持っている。
That possibility is what interests me.
