Do We Really Live in the Same “Present”?

I suddenly found myself thinking about something.

Can two people ever be born on exactly the same date and at exactly the same time?

On paper, perhaps. Their birth records might both say, for example, “January 1, 1970, at 10:00 a.m.”

But in reality, two people can never be born at precisely the same moment. Even if the recorded time is identical, there must be some difference—seconds, or even fractions of a second.

In other words, no two human beings begin their existence at exactly the same point in time.

Then, when two people say that they are living in the same “present,” are they really experiencing the same present?

The clocks may show the same time.

But one person entered the world a fraction of a moment earlier, while the other entered it slightly later.

Their time was never perfectly synchronized from the beginning.

This is not simply a question about birth times.

Each person exists in a different place, receives different light, accumulates different experiences, and carries different memories.

So perhaps it is more accurate to think of the present not as a single point shared by everyone, but as a field in which countless different temporal positions overlap.

The “now” experienced by A and the “now” experienced by B may be identical according to the clock, yet they are not necessarily identical as points of existence.

The same is true of the past.

Even if two people were born on the same date, their exact moments of birth were different. The amount of time each has lived is therefore never perfectly identical.

And their futures are different as well.

Each person is moving toward a different future from a slightly different position in time.

If we think about it this way,

we may be living in the “now,” but we are never occupying exactly the same temporal position.

And if that is true, then perhaps the present is not a single point at all.

Perhaps the present is a field where countless different temporal positions temporarily overlap.

I would like to think of this in terms of a “phase difference” in time.

A difference so small that we normally ignore it.

Yet perhaps these minute differences are precisely what separate one person's experience, memory, perception, and way of seeing the world from another's.

The question of micro-phase difference, which I have been exploring through photography, may therefore not be a problem belonging only to photography.

Just as there is a temporal difference between one photograph and another, there may also be a temporal difference between one human being and another, and between one world and another.

And we encounter one another in the “present” while carrying these differences with us.

We may appear to live in the same present, but no one occupies exactly the same position in time.

Once you begin to think about it this way, even the word “now” starts to look different.
