The Village of Mononoke
The second round of rice harvesting is the day after tomorrow.
During my evening patrol, I spotted a huge wild boar wandering around the garbage collection point.
Heh. I thought, and fired one of the bottle rockets I keep in my mini truck.
Direct hit!
...Huh?
The boar just carried on as if nothing had happened.
Unbelievable!
Thinking, I'm not afraid of some wild boar! I followed it, and it headed straight into an abandoned house.
Good grief, what a stench!
An old woman had died in this house.
Now it's completely overgrown and neglected, with a foul smell hanging in the air.
So this is where it lives!
Looking out over the rice paddies, I spotted two sets of footprints.
A boar and a deer, that's what!
Shishi, shika, chou! — boar, deer, and butterfly! (A famous combination in Japanese hanafuda cards.)
A magnificent black stag with a fine set of antlers was also watching over Kadode from the village headman's mountain.
Two more bottle rockets!
Off it bolted!
Good.
Late in the evening, I went back to inspect the rice paddies.
Fresh footprints!
What on earth is this place?
A village of mononoke — spirits and supernatural creatures!
So I put up some deterrent tape, turned on a radio, and switched on the lights...
That ought to do it!
A formidable new enemy has appeared!
