What disappears becomes what remains.
To doświadczenie czystego potencjału w teraźniejszości.
Pomiędzy chwilą, a jej cieniem.
Armine Hqn
Stephen R. Costie
Rozali Karayusuf
Grzegorz Gorczynski
Memo: How Dialogues with Friends Have Contributed to the Development of the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences
Date of preparation: October 6, 2026
Purpose: Working memo for academic writing (a collection of material for citation and reference)
Introduction
Over the past several weeks, exchanges on Facebook have brought several independent external readings to the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences and Paired Composition. This memo selects only those exchanges that may be relevant to the development of the paper and organizes how each person's remarks affected particular aspects of the theory. For important passages, the original wording is retained together with a literal translation.
Section I. Dialogue with Emilla Oktawia Łagiewska (Wrocław, University of the Arts, Art History and Visual Arts)
1. The Verticality of Time (September 25, 2026)
Shinkawa discussed Emilla's painting Sunflowers in the Field [Inner Self-Portrait], interpreting the vertical arrangement of three withered sunflowers as an accumulation of time. The core of this reading was expressed in the following sentence:
What disappears becomes what remains.
Emilla responded that this sentence articulated a reflection embedded in her own handwriting and stated that consciousness and personality are constructed through layers accumulated day by day and year by year, and that human beings exist within a continuous “now” that encompasses the past and the future (originally expressed in Polish).
The significance of this exchange for the paper is that the proposition repeatedly advanced by Shinkawa—that the past, present, and future coexist in the same place—received an independent formulation from the artist herself, using the vocabulary of the verticality of time.
This dialogue also generated an unfinished idea for Shinkawa. Rather than conceiving the accumulation of time as an orderly vertical stratification, he began considering it as a process of “folding,” in which accumulated layers are distorted under pressure and movement. In this direction of thought, the actual form of phase differences may be closer to folding than to a regular stratigraphic structure.
2. Horizontal Falling (Late September 2026)
Shinkawa referred to Cocteau's phrase Vivre est une chute horizontale (“To live is a horizontal fall”), adding that the Earth itself is continually falling toward the Sun, and suggesting that the “nothingness” between things may not be nothingness after all.
Emilla responded that vertical falling is governed by gravity, whereas horizontal falling is governed by the “gravity of time.” Regarding nothingness, she wrote:
Literal translation:
The absence of knowledge or prediction, or the absence of something “now,” does not mean that it does not exist.
In response, Shinkawa wrote that he regarded death not as an endpoint but as a point at which transformation occurs. He also stated that if the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences were one day to be demonstrated within physics, it could alter not only our understanding of the present, past, and future, but also our understanding of death.
This latter aspect should be treated in the paper not as part of the theory itself, but as a possible direction for future development.
3. Three Impressions of the Photograph of Sunflowers
In response to Shinkawa's photograph of sunflowers, Emilla identified three elements: the vertical tension balanced by the horizontal frame; the punctum as an invisible wall of air rising from the road; and a scene resembling a polonaise in which stationary figures face one another. She concluded by describing the photograph as a “postscript to a dialogue on the verticality of time.”
In his response, Shinkawa stated that elements he had not consciously recognized at the moment of taking the photograph became visible to him through her interpretation. This constitutes a record of Shinkawa's own experience of a work being interpreted beyond the artist's conscious intention and may serve as supporting material for a methodology based on relational interpretation by the viewer.
In the same response, Shinkawa wrote that “the central axis of the world may exist within the local, or within the interior of the local.”
4. “Ma” and Perceptual Residue (October 3, 2026)
This is the exchange most directly connected to the paper.
After reading the article on the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences, Emilla stated that she was particularly drawn to the transition from the temporality of conversation to the perception of images, and to the explanation of “Ma” through “perceptual residue.” Two points are particularly relevant:
To doświadczenie czystego potencjału w teraźniejszości.
Literal translation:
“Ma” is not a static emptiness cut out of matter (or out of a conversation). It is an experience of pure potentiality in the present.
She also wrote:
Literal translation:
The gestures of the gaze seeking to reorganize the relationship between two photographs correspond precisely to conversational “repair.”
She further interpreted the condition that a micro-phase difference should not be defined retrospectively, but must be observable at the moment of utterance, as a key element of the argument. This independently corresponds to the definition adopted in the final version of Section 13: the residue that remains unanticipated and unresolved at the moment of utterance constitutes the antecedent, while repair and reinterpretation constitute the consequent.
The essence of Shinkawa's response, originally written in Polish, was as follows: Emilla reads “Ma” from the side of consciousness, as something remaining outside the spotlight of attention; Shinkawa reads it from the side of the image, as the distance between two photographs. The difference between these readings is itself a micro-phase difference, and it is precisely this difference that allows the dialogue to continue.
One point requires particular caution. The explanation of attention in terms of a “spotlight” was an interpretation added by Emilla after reading the article; it is not part of Shinkawa's original definition. When cited in the paper, it should therefore be explicitly identified as her interpretation and distinguished from Shinkawa's definition.
5. The Mannequin Post (October 3, 2026)
A passage from one of Emilla's own posts may also be relevant to the paper:
Pomiędzy chwilą, a jej cieniem.
Literal translation:
While the human being is eternal movement and continually projects themselves into Time, the mannequin is, in the melancholy of unfulfillment, imprisoned within it once and for all. Between the moment and its shadow.
The conception of the static image as being imprisoned in time can be connected to the current formulation that photography establishes a static image independently from the flow of reality. However, this should remain a peripheral reference.
Section II. Helena Passaporte (Lisbon, PhD)
The exchanges with Helena provided Shinkawa with several opportunities to distinguish the scope and limits of his theory. Three points are relevant to the paper.
First is the distinction between two forms of delay. There is a delay between an event and its photographic capture, and another between photographic capture and interpretation. The Theory of Micro-Phase Differences concerns the phase difference between the two images within a Paired Composition, rather than the temporal delay of reception. This distinction was established through the exchange with Helena.
Second is her description of an image as “thin air” as a record of time, together with the example that even when the movement of extending a finger occurs “simultaneously,” the two events are not strictly identical in temporal terms. Shinkawa positioned this as precisely the interval that the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences attempts to describe.
Third is Helena's interpretation of “interval” as the interval between the moment immediately preceding the photographic capture and the moment of capture itself. In response, Shinkawa emphasized that the observer is not an entity external to the photograph, but becomes part of the structure through the perception of phase differences.
Section III. Susana Llerena (Buenos Aires, craftsperson specializing in medianeras / shared boundary walls)
Her critique of the text concerning red spider lilies is important as a critique of the theory itself.
She reinterpreted the intersection between the “horizontal movement of plants” and the “vertical transmission of scripture” described by Shinkawa as a structure analogous to a medianera. She further suggested that a mode of writing that preserves a mystery as a mystery is like a temple: readers may admire it, but leave with nothing tangible in their hands.
Shinkawa responded that his task was not to build upon the intersection, but to leave it open and visible as it is. She subsequently replied that the person who presses the shutter has already made a selection, and that the final “perhaps” is not humility but an emergency exit for avoiding responsibility (in substance).
For the paper, it is appropriate to retain this exchange as the sharpest external criticism of Shinkawa's observational attitude and methodological position of delaying premature conclusions, presenting both the criticism and the response.
The issue also connects with the relational axiom of the theory: the act of choosing itself constitutes the first step in establishing a relation.
Section IV. Responses from Other Readers
Armine Hqn wrote, in essence, that although people live within the same moment, they do not live within the same “present”; that photography is a site where overlapping but non-identical times encounter one another; and that each viewer reconstructs that moment through perception. This corresponds closely to the positioning of Paired Composition as an act in which relations are established within the viewer's perception.
Stephen R. Costie expressed interest in the idea of a present that loops and eternally returns in photography, and in the point at which such recurrence abandons narrative progression. Shinkawa responded that he was not approaching the question through concepts such as an afterlife or God, but as a hypothesis that could be examined under observable conditions. This statement may be used as a clarification of his methodological position in the paper.
Rozali Karayusuf interpreted the work as an expression of spirituality. Shinkawa responded that spirituality is important as half of the human experience, but that he does not wish to use it to stop thought or impose it upon others; rather, he wishes to hold spirituality alongside thought.
Grzegorz Gorczynski repositioned the article on Paired Composition not as a theory in itself, but as a practice for making visible the coexistence of past, present, and future at the same location, while treating the experiments in permanent preservation on wood and ceramic as a separate line of inquiry. This provides a basis for keeping these two lines distinct in the paper.
A French reader provided an anecdote concerning the world's first photograph. Ana Queirós offered a brief response whose value lies primarily in documenting the range of reactions.
Section V. Overall Organization: The Influence on the Theory
The readings offered by these friends can be arranged along a single axis: where the act of establishing relations takes place.
Emilla reads from the side of consciousness, understanding residue as something that remains outside the field of attention. Helena reads from the side of the temporal delay of reception and prompted a distinction between different forms of delay. Susana reads from the standpoint of construction and confronts the responsibility inherent in selection. Shinkawa himself reads from the side of the image, understanding the relation as a distance between two photographs.
As Shinkawa wrote in his response, the discrepancies among these readings themselves function as micro-phase differences, and it is precisely these differences that allow the dialogue to continue.
This structure is consistent with the current stage of the theory. The present formulation is that difference does not arise independently of relational positioning, and that such relational positioning occurs not necessarily through a particular individual, but through the functional position of a third party. The dialogues with friends provide concrete examples of how such a position may emerge in practice.
Section VI. Points of Caution for Academic Writing
Use of quotations
When quotations from Facebook comments are incorporated into an academic paper, it is advisable to obtain prior confirmation and permission from the individuals concerned. For Polish, Spanish, and other original-language passages, the policy of presenting a literal translation alongside the original may be adopted.
Verification of dates
The exact dates of Emilla's “horizontal falling” exchange and the thread concerning the sunflower photograph have not been recorded with certainty. The dates should be verified on Facebook before they are incorporated into the paper.
Distinguishing the theory from peripheral material
The discussion of death and mortality in response to “horizontal falling,” as well as the statements concerning spirituality, should be treated as background positions rather than as components of the theory itself.
Hypothesis concerning the quality of readers' responses
The hypothesis that the decisive factor in readers' responses may be whether a work functions as a device that generates thought could be developed separately as a subject of reception research, particularly in relation to European readers.
Conclusion
Through these dialogues over the past several weeks, the Theory of Micro-Phase Differences has changed from a theory developed primarily through individual reflection into a theory that has been read, questioned, and responded to by readers occupying different positions.
The definitions of residue and repair were reinforced by Emilla's reading; the distinction between forms of temporal delay was clarified through the exchanges with Helena; and the question of responsibility inherent in selection was raised by Susana.
The next stage of the theory is to incorporate these three elements into an analysis of the act by which two photographs are perceived as a single pair.
